Have you been to MarineTraffic.com? It uses Google Maps technology and AIS (Automatic Identification System) on ships to record their locations. It only works if someone has an AIS receiver and can upload that info to the site, so it’s not everywhere yet.
I like using the site in conjunction with the hydrophone at work — http://orcasound.net/ — so I can see what ships are out there makin’ all that noise!
Looks like one of the LSD ships.
LSD of course meaning it’s an amphibious landing ship.
I think the LSD is “Landing Ship Dock” or some such.
Some big mama was stranded at Pearl Harbor a few weeks ago.
